Humanity, like nobility, is not a given, I'll agree with that. Human beings have so much potential for either wickedness or transcended illumination.

I talk a little more on the subject of condemning people as 'mindless' (your word) on my <a href = "http://poeticterrorist.com/blog/poetic-terrorism/its-much-too-easy-to-see-the-blind" rel="nofollow">'notes' blog</a>. Might be worth a read... it's part of a larger segment I've been working on.

We'll be fine so long as we follow Krishnamurti's shining advice: think for yourself!

I've always maintained that the various and sundry crises unfolding now before us do not have a physical genesis, but a spiritual one. With the $700 billion handout to the wealthiest 400 Americans happening today, that thesis has transformed into fact--and so our problems will mount, exponentially, until, as you said, the catastrophe forces the mindless (not your word) to awaken.

It is my position that humanity is near extinction. But I use the word 'humanity' differently than most. There are 7 billion people walking around the world; there are very few humans among them. Humans: those who have refused to destroy their vital core, their soul, if you will, in order to profit by, belong to, or in any other way give themselves over to the Machine Culture of Death. The Internet is an invaluable tool to spread the word of humanity (as opposed to herdmanity) and democracy; for humans to survive it is essential that the Internet continue to thrive and grow for precisely that reason.

Will we survive? $700 billion says we won't. But I'll tilt at the windmills and look with my chin up and put my "money"--my creative life, my passion, my anger, my rebelliousness--on the table and say we will. But not without major, radical, and, to almost everybody, very painful and catastrophic changes. Because that's what it takes to wake people up. Humans, on the other hand, need no such proddings.
